2018 Waikato / Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards Winner. Sumich Chaplin Architects.

Nestled in the lush farmlands near the Hinuera Hills the classic modern architecture of Matt Chaplin of Sumich Chaplin Architects lent itself naturally to a dark monochromatic palette contrasted with stark white ceilings and walls and bold rich accent colours. The little colour that was used reflects the surroundings, from the botanical green linen on the pavilion occasional chairs which echo the green pastures to the deep plum of the media room sectional which imitates the dark purples seen in the late twilight over the farm.

The house has impressive expanses of glass to take advantage of the sweeping vistas of the farm. To harness the compelling indoor/outdoor connection, aspects of the architecture of the house, such as the local Hinuera volcanic stone, were used throughout the interior.

The sparse palette belies the multitude of textures in the home. Sawn flat Hinuera stone was split to create rugged indoor and outdoor Fireplaces. Hinuera stone is a pumice coloured light stone with hints of copper veining. Dark Titanium Quartzite stone has been used on the hearth and the outdoor BBQ to compliment the rough texture of the Hinuera stone.

Dark linen wallpaper and light stained oak timber floors offer another contrast in texture. While hand blown cooper lights reflect a mercurial glow against the dark bronze door and steel hardware. A copper nubuck leather ottoman, dark charcoal linen sectional and white linen dining chairs perfect the striking contract of textures.

When the home is taken as whole it is a masterclass of balance. Light and Dark, Smooth and Rough, masculine and feminine, the wildness of the outdoors and the comfort of home.

This is a sophisticated farmhouse for a modern family, designed with a timeless aesthetic. The architecture has been excellently realised, and includes cleverly detailed, crafted and refined materials, of which the visual and structural qualities of locally sourced Hinuera stone are particular highlights
